Song of the Day: “Time Has Got Nothing To Do With It” by Peter Murphy

I was never much into the Goth music scene, but did appreciate some of the bands who came out of it.  Bauhaus was one of those bands.  The lead singer, Peter Murphy went solo in 1983 and his second album called Love Hysteria still holds up pretty well.   There is not one weak song in the mix and the production was pretty impressive for that time.  He has released a number of CDs since then and occasionally reunites with Bauhaus and tours with Nine Inch Nails.  All of these artistic eforts have been thoughtful albeit sometimes esoteric musical journeys for the artist and his fans.

Peter’s baritone voice is an instrument in and of itself.  He can almost sound operatic at times.  It often feels like there are multiple layers to his songs and your interpretation only broadens with each listen.   As expected given his background the music is often haunting or somewhat dark but he does surprise you with a bit of light now and then.   “Time Has Got Nothing To Do With It” is one of my favorite compositions that Peter has written.  It defies the conventional songwriting formula and comes across more as a poem.   There is a simmering intensity throughout the song that only reaches it climax at the very end. There is also a hypnotic quality to the music and overall vibe.
