Every time I hear this song I smile. Burt Bacharach wrote a great tune and B.J. Thomas was the perfect person to sing it. I chose the video clip from the movie Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid because this scene is what I always think of when I hear it (note: it takes about 40 seconds to get to the song). It is one of those rare moments when a song, a movie, and several performers come together to create timeless magic. It is simply impossible not to like Paul Newman. I believe people will be watching this clip from the movie and listening to this song long after I’m gone and feeling the same way (which I find comforting).
Burt Bacharach is a very talented songwriter who never gets enough credit for his lyrics. The beauty of his music and melodies is without question. Maybe it’s because the message is typically fairly simple and straightforward. He also seems to approach things from a lighter perspective, but this is clearly a man who has something to say. There’s a reason why people are covering his songs more than 40 years after some of them were written. They connect with the listener on a basic human level. Not all popular music has to have and edge and attitude. Sometimes a simple catchy melody and heartfelt lyrics is all that is necessary.
