Song Of The Weekend: Echo & The Bunnymen – “In The Margins”

I have been a big fan of Echo & the Bunnymen since I was an undergrad in college and they are still going strong.  Ian McCulloch and the boys rarely disappoint.  There have been lineup changes and break-ups through the years, but the core remains the same.  Like all great acts they have a distinctive sound.  You never get the sense that they rush making their music and that every song is labored over tirelessly.  The production is amazingly crisp and clean.  It’s been clear since their first album that all the members of this band were talented musicians and didn’t have to hide behind production gimmicks to cover up their lack of ability.

As the primary songwriter Ian clearly marches to the beat of his own drummer.  However, his songs also feel timeless.  I’ve heard he can be difficult to work with, but that doesn’t surprise me.  He clearly is a perfectionist.  If you haven’t heard his solo efforts you should check them out as well.  “In The Margins” is a newer song which captures the band’s vibe perfectly.

Tuck me in
I need to sleep now
I need dream how
I used to dream

Look me in
Look me in the face now
Help me believe how
I used to believe

Now do you see how
They’re in the margins
Below and up above
I’ll see now
How life wins
When all that’s left is love

Row me in
Lessen my heart, love
Loosen my soul, love
Spirits and dreams

Hope begins
Right at the start of
The search for the gold, love
In the driving rain

Now do you see how
We’re in the margins
We’re below and up above
I see now
How life wins
When we’re all that’s left is love

We’re all that’s left
Of love
We’re all that’s left
Of love

Tuck me in
I need to sleep now
I need dream how
I used to dream

Look me in
Look me in the face now
Help me believe how
I used to believe

Now do you see how
They’re in the margins
Below and up above
I see now
How life wins
When all that’s left is love

all that’s left is love
all that’s left of love
